The Opportunity
Hon Nicola Grigg, Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Minister for Women, Associate Minister of Agriculture (Horticulture), and Associate Minister for ACC, is seeking a Level 1 Press Secretary to join her Wellington-based office. Nicola has represented the Selwyn electorate since 2020 and leads a committed and high-performing team.
This role offers a rare chance to be directly involved in shaping and communicating key government policies and initiatives to the New Zealand public. Some travel may be required.
What to Expect
As Press Secretary, you will be part of a trusted, highly capable team supporting the Minister across her portfolio responsibilities. Drawing on your understanding of the Trade and Investment, Women, Agriculture, and ACC sectors, you will:
- Ensure media statements and communications align with government priorities
- Provide strategic advice on emerging issues
- Support the Minister in developing and promoting key initiatives
- Navigate complex and fast-moving information with accuracy and insight
This is an intermediate-level position. You’ll receive strong support as you grow your capability and develop your communications expertise.
This is an events-based role tied to the parliamentary term. Salary range: $94,499 – $117,598 per annum.
What You’ll Bring
While experience in media, communications, or journalism is beneficial, we also welcome applicants with expertise in the Minister’s portfolio areas who are eager to apply their communication skills in a new environment.
To be successful, you will bring:
- An understanding of issues relevant to the Minister’s portfolios
- Excellent organisational skills and a proactive attitude
- The ability to explain complex topics clearly across different audiences and channels
- A keen sense for how stories develop—and how narratives can be shaped
- Strong awareness of media dynamics and the wider political landscape
- Confidence with social media, speechwriting, and drafting press releases
- The ability to build and maintain relationships across the Minister’s office, the press gallery, and a wide range of stakeholders
