About

Niagara Sawmilling Company Ltd is a proudly family-owned and operated New Zealand business and one of the country’s leading timber processors and exporters. Based in Kennington, Invercargill, Niagara operates large-scale, integrated sawmilling, remanufacturing, and value-added manufacturing operations, employing hundreds of people across multiple sites.

As part of the wider K G Richardson Group, Niagara sits within a diverse portfolio of manufacturing, forestry, transport, and property businesses. This scale and integration create a complex, fast-paced industrial environment where reliability, safety, and continuous improvement are critical to success.

KGR and Niagara are known for being hands-on, practical, and people-focused. Decision-making is close to the operation, engineering input is valued, and teams are encouraged to contribute ideas, challenge existing practices, and help improve how we work. For those who enjoy industrial problem-solving, collaboration, and variety, Niagara offers the opportunity to build a long-term and rewarding career.

As a Plant Maintenance Engineer, you will play a key role in ensuring the ongoing reliability, safety, and performance of our plant and equipment within a heavy industrial manufacturing environment. Working closely with production, engineering, and leadership teams, your responsibilities will include:

  • Carrying out planned and reactive maintenance across sawmilling and remanufacturing plant
  • Diagnosing faults, troubleshooting breakdowns, and implementing effective long-term solutions
  • Contributing to preventative maintenance strategies to minimise downtime and improve asset reliability
  • Working with electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives and plant upgrades
  • Ensuring all work is completed in line with health and safety requirements and engineering best practice
  • Providing technical input and mentoring where required within the wider maintenance team

This is a hands-on role offering variety, responsibility, and the opportunity to make a tangible impact in a high-performing industrial operation.

What We Offer

  • Competitive remuneration aligned with skills and experience
  • Stable, full-time employment within a well-established and respected business
  • Modern plant, ongoing investment in equipment and infrastructure
  • Opportunities for training, development, and career progression
  • A supportive, values-driven workplace that genuinely invests in its people
  • A variety of work patterns to suit you and your life.

Our ideal candidate is a practical, safety-focused engineer who enjoys working in a fast-paced industrial environment. You will bring proven maintenance engineering experience within heavy industry, ideally gained in New Zealand or Australia, and be comfortable working with large-scale manufacturing equipment.

You will also demonstrate:

  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills
  • Experience in preventative and reactive maintenance programmes
  • The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • A proactive mindset and commitment to continuous improvement
  • Clear communication skills and a professional, respectful approach

Beyond technical capability, we are looking for someone who is a genuinely good fit for Niagara and our values. Someone who works safely, takes pride in their craft, supports their teammates, and does the right thing. We build strong teams, back each other through challenges, and strive for excellence in everything we do.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Maintenance Engineer to join a stable, growing organisation, work on complex industrial plant, and be part of a team where your skills and contribution are truly valued.
