About

Wairoa District Council is looking for a skilled and motivated GIS Officer to join our team and support the effective management, analysis and development of our spatial data systems. This role plays a key part in enabling smart planning and informed decision-making across the organisation.

If you enjoy problem-solving, have strong technical skills, and want to work in a role that connects data with community outcomes — we'd love to hear from you.

Key responsibilities:

  • Maintain and administer Council's GIS platforms and datasets, ensuring accuracy and integrity.
  • Support staff with GIS tools, training, troubleshooting and user guidance.
  • Create and deliver high-quality maps, plans and spatial analysis.
  • Develop scripts, tools and services to enhance GIS functionality.
  • Coordinate GIS projects and contribute to system improvements.
  • Liaise with internal teams and external providers to integrate spatial data and systems.
  • Provide technical support for GIS hardware and related software.

What we're looking for:

We're after someone who brings a strong blend of technical expertise, problem-solving ability, and great communication skills. You'll ideally have:

  • Experience with GIS systems (e.g. QGIS Desktop, QGIS Server, ESRI).
  • Solid understanding of spatial data analysis and map production.
  • Confidence in providing user support and training.
  • Strong general IT skills and familiarity with troubleshooting software/hardware.
  • A relevant GIS qualification (or comparable experience), and at least 2 years in a similar role.

A qualification in IT and a current drivers licence are also desirable.

Why join us?

You'll join a collaborative, future-focused organisation where your skills make a real impact. You'll work across a variety of projects, help drive smart solutions, and contribute to meaningful outcomes for our community.
